Lord of the Dark - Dawn Thompson warning: Adult Situations and Language ahead:

number 4 in my seemingly-neverending quest to find quality fantasy erotica or PNR or whatever its called. this one is the best so far, but that is not saying a whole lot. the characterizations attempt to be mythic but are often merely drippy. there is an attempt to make the heroine fiesty, but instead she never rises above the level of aggravating. and there is an attempt as well to make the hero brooding and complex, but what was meant to be iconic comes across as wooden and often hilarious. i did not mind the almost insane frequency of the sex scenes - this is erotica after all - but their repetitiveness grew mind-numbing because they were all so BORING. it was pretty much consistently vanilla and cliched and mind-blowingly ecstatic and wondrous. with some notable exceptions (see last paragraph).

BUT STILL, i'll take whatever enjoyment i will find. there is something so awesomely ludicrous about the title character, he almost becomes a magnificent creation. Gideon the winged angel, Lord of the Dark, cursed with perpetual arousal! there are many enjoyably jaw-dropping descriptions of the byronic Lord Gideon flying about, massive boner in hand, jacking himself off in the sky, all the while cursing his fate. now if that's not an iconic image, it should be. there is much amusement to be had in his casual style of walking around, Gideon the Lesser bobbing away in stiff profile, as the Lord of the Dark matter-of-factly conversates with those around him. well it's his dick and his curse, i suppose there's no reason for him to be ashamed and no reason for his various pals (who include the Lord of the Deep, the Lord of the Forest, and the Lord of the Flame) not to comment nonchalantly on his state of affairs. you know, just a bunch of dudes hangin', no big deal right?

and the most enjoyable thing of all: Plant Sex and Wind Sex! wow. there is something so wonderfully crazy and creative about the various sex scenes involving one person and the wind or one person and an amorous forest. but hey, no judgments - sometimes you just gotta make the best of what's available, i guess!
